Zambia Pledges Support as SADC Strengthens Development Financing

Zambia has reaffirmed its commitment to regional integration, financial discipline, and sustainable development as the Southern African Development Community (SADC) intensifies efforts to enhance its financial autonomy.

Speaking at the ongoing SADC Council of Ministers Meeting in Harare, Permanent Secretary for International Relations and Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ms. Etambuyu Anamela Gundersen, emphasized Zambia’s unwavering dedication to fulfilling its financial obligations within the bloc.

Ms. Gundersen emphasized the significance of timely remittances from Member States, particularly in the face of declining financial support from international partners. She noted that sustaining financial contributions is essential for achieving SADC’s long-term development goals and fostering regional economic stability.

Highlighting Zambia’s active role in regional affairs, the Permanent Secretary expressed gratitude to SADC Heads of State and Government for their endorsement of Dr. Samuel Munzele Maimbo as the bloc’s candidate for President of the African Development Bank (AfDB).

With elections set for May 29, 2025, Zambia remains committed to rallying support for Dr. Maimbo’s candidature, citing his leadership as key to advancing economic transformation and financial resilience across the region.

As SADC pushes for greater financial self-sufficiency, Zambia stands firm in advocating for enhanced cooperation and disciplined financial management. The country continues to champion policies that promote sustainable development, ensuring that regional economic aspirations remain on track despite global financial uncertainties.
