Vice President Nalumango Launches Strategic Plan for Women Leaders in Climate Action

Zambia’s Vice President, Her Honour Mrs. Mutale Nalumango, has launched the Strategic Plan for Women Leaders for Climate Action (WLCA), a landmark initiative aimed at empowering women to take leadership roles in addressing climate change.

Speaking at the launch, Vice President Nalumango emphasized that the initiative marks the beginning of a transformative journey and urged stakeholders to actively participate in climate resilience efforts.

“This plan aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 13 on climate action and Goal 5 on gender equity. By prioritizing women’s leadership, we are taking critical steps toward a more sustainable future,” she stated.

The five-year strategic plan outlines key objectives, including enhancing community resilience, amplifying women’s voices in climate policy advocacy, and securing critical ecosystems through investments and strategic action.

Minister of Green Economy and Environment, Hon. Mike Mposha, reiterated that WLCA’s strategy aligns with Zambia’s National Green Strategy and the Eighth National Development Plan (8NDP).

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to combat climate change and called on stakeholders to support initiatives aimed at sustainable development.

Hon. Mposha also highlighted efforts to enforce Forest Act No. 4 of 2015, particularly concerning illegal constructions in the remaining 716 hectares of Forest 27. He urged women leaders to advocate for environmental conservation and educate future generations on the dangers of deforestation.

British High Commissioner to Zambia, Rebecca Terzeon, praised the initiative, describing it as a bold step toward economic empowerment and sustainable development.

“WLCA’s vision of a sustainable and equitable future, where women lead climate resilience and economic transformation, is not just aspirational, it’s essential. This launch will unlock economic potential, foster innovation, and create lasting impact,” she said.

The event attracted key stakeholders, including UN agencies, the British High Commission, UNICEF Zambia, and climate advocacy groups, reinforcing Zambia’s commitment to gender-inclusive climate action.
