FQM Hands Over Landmark Copperbelt Geological Survey to Zambian Gov’t

First Quantum Minerals (FQM) has officially handed over a groundbreaking aerial geological survey of the Copperbelt Province to the Zambian government, marking a significant step towards unlocking the region’s full mining potential.

The survey, fully funded by FQM, addresses a long-standing gap in comprehensive geological data, despite over a century of mining activities in the region. The findings, now available through the government’s Geological Survey Department, are expected to stimulate new exploration and mining investments.

Speaking at the handover ceremony at State House, President Hakainde Hichilema emphasized the critical importance of the survey in advancing Zambia’s mining sector. “One cannot exploit or manage resources that are not well understood. Even if we know the Copperbelt has mineral endowment, where exactly is it? How deep is it? How do we package projects? This has been an anomaly for a long time, and that is why this government made it a priority,” he said.

FQM Chief Executive Officer Tristan Pascall reaffirmed the company’s commitment to working with the government to maximize Zambia’s mining potential. “Zambia has been discussing the need to develop opportunities for exploration and reach its target of producing 3 million tonnes of copper annually. The key to that is exploration, and we are here to deliver on our promise to support this journey,” Pascall stated.

Mines and Minerals Development Minister Paul Kabuswe confirmed that the survey was completed on time under a memorandum of understanding between the government and FQM. The new data will be instrumental in determining any remaining gaps in the National Geological Minerals Mapping survey launched by President Hichilema in August 2023.

FQM Exploration Manager Jon Stacey highlighted the impact of the survey in providing mining rights holders with crucial data to support exploration efforts. “We identified the Copperbelt as the area where such data would have the most impact. This aligns with the government’s strategy to achieve its 3 million tonnes production target,” he noted.

Beyond this geological initiative, FQM continues to invest in Zambia’s economic development through infrastructure projects, renewable energy initiatives, and community programs. These efforts emphasize the company’s commitment to ensuring that mining benefits are widely shared, fostering a sustainable and prosperous future for all Zambians.
