WHO Africa Director-Elect Passes Away in India

The World Health Organization’s (WHO) Africa Regional Director-elect, Dr. Faustine Ndugulile, has died at 55 while receiving medical treatment in India, Tanzanian parliamentary speaker Tulia Ackson confirmed on Wednesday.

Plans to repatriate Dr. Ndugulile’s body to Tanzania are underway, with funeral arrangements expected to be announced soon. The exact nature of his ailment remains undisclosed.

Dr. Ndugulile, a distinguished public health expert, previously served as a Member of Parliament for Kigamboni and held key governmental positions, including Tanzania’s Health Assistant Minister (2017–2020) and Minister of Information and Communication (2020–2021).

His election in August as WHO Africa’s Regional Director marked a milestone in his career. He was set to assume office in February 2025, succeeding Dr. Matshidiso Moeti.

In his acceptance speech, Dr. Ndugulile pledged to prioritize Africa’s health challenges and foster well-being across the continent. Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan mourned his passing, describing it as “devastating.” WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus also expressed deep sorrow, stating he was “shocked and saddened.”

Colleagues and Tanzanian legislators praised Dr. Ndugulile’s humility and dedication. Former legislator Godbless Lema highlighted his integrity, noting he was less combative than others in the ruling party.

Dr. Ndugulile’s death leaves a void in Africa’s healthcare leadership as the continent continues to face critical health challenges.
