Zambia Hosts Landmark Conference on Insect Science for Sustainable Development

Minister of Technology and Science, Hon. Felix Chipota Mutati, has called on scientists and researchers to deliver valuable and positive outcomes that can address critical global challenges.

Speaking at a press briefing ahead of the 25th Biennial Scientific Conference and the 45th Sapphire Jubilee of the African Association of Insect Scientists (AAIS), Hon. Mutati urged experts to explore the crucial intersections of insect science with agriculture, energy, climate change, and health.

The conference, themed “Insects and Human Welfare: New Frontiers for Sustainable Development,” will examine the role of insects in enhancing agriculture, public health, and environmental sustainability.

Minister Mutati emphasized that Zambia’s growing leadership in science and innovation underscores its commitment to advancing research to tackle issues like food security and climate change.

The event is set to bring together over 300 scientists, policymakers, and industry leaders from Africa and beyond.

Minister Mutati highlighted Zambia’s agricultural sector, which employs about 60% of the population, noting that pest management and innovations in insect science are crucial for boosting crop productivity and resilience.

He also emphasized the importance of insect science in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including zero hunger, good health, climate action, and biodiversity conservation.

The conference will feature in-depth discussions on topics such as sustainable pest management, pollinator conservation, vector control for disease prevention, and agricultural biotechnology innovations. These sessions aim to harness insect science to address pressing global challenges.

Dr. Abiola Olufueke Oke, President of AAIS, also praised Zambia for hosting the event, noting it provides a unique opportunity for African scientists to share knowledge and strengthen collaborations to foster innovation. The conference promises to be a transformative platform for the scientific community, with potential to shape the future of sustainable development across Africa.

The conference, scheduled to take place in Lusaka, will offer a chance for Zambian researchers, including young scientists and students, to connect with global experts and build partnerships to tackle current and future challenges.
