IsDB Partners with WHO and Development Banks to Drive Health Impact Investments

The Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) has committed a significant US$ 10 million grant to the World Health Organization (WHO) as part of the Health Impact Investment Platform (HIIP), an initiative aimed at strengthening primary health care and resilience in low- and middle-income countries.

This partnership, announced on the sidelines of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, marks a key step in addressing the dual challenges of health and climate crises globally.

The HIIP is a groundbreaking collaboration among multilateral development banks (MDBs), WHO, and nations in need of resilient health solutions. It focuses on investments in climate and crisis-resilient primary health care services and systems, targeting underserved communities. This initiative will enhance health systems’ preparedness for emerging health threats and climate challenges.

The US$ 10 million grant from IsDB will fund WHO’s technical assistance, helping countries assess investment needs and design impactful health projects. These projects will form the basis for co-investment by MDBs, ensuring that resources are directed to areas with the highest potential for positive health outcomes.

This partnership is also expected to unlock at least US$ 500 million in health investments, contributing to the broader goal of mobilizing US$ 1.5 billion for critical health priorities.

IsDB President Dr. Muhammad Al Jasser expressed the bank’s commitment, saying, “We are proud to support the Health Impact Investment Platform as part of our dedication to advancing universal health coverage and resilience in our Member Countries. By working with WHO and other partners, we can scale up primary health care, strengthening systems to withstand future crises.”

WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasized the need for sustainable financing to bolster health systems in low- and middle-income countries. “This partnership combines WHO’s public health expertise with the financing capabilities of the IsDB and other MDBs. Together, we can improve health outcomes and build a healthier future for all.”

This initiative aligns with WHO’s Fourteenth General Programme of Work, focusing on enhancing climate resilience and electrifying 10,000 health facilities, including solar energy solutions. Through this strategic collaboration, IsDB, WHO, and MDBs aim to create a stronger, more equitable health system worldwide.
