Govt Pledges to Enhance Science, Technology, and Innovation Framework
The Zambian government is set to reform its science, technology, and innovation policies to foster a stronger foundation for sustainable growth, Minister of Technology and Science Hon. Felix Chipota Mutati announced at the 2024 Annual Science, Technology, and Innovation Merit Awards.
A revised science and technology act is anticipated by the first quarter of 2025, aligning with a revamped national science and technology innovation policy expected to be presented to the Cabinet.
Addressing the awards ceremony, Minister Mutati, represented by the Director of Science Technology and Innovation Dr. Larry Mweetwa, emphasized the importance of creating an environment that promotes innovation to drive economic growth and resilience amid global challenges such as climate change and the need for renewable energy advancements.
He urged private sector and cooperating partners to strengthen partnerships with the government, citing the need for greater investment in research, innovation, and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education.
“The power of science and technology is critical in transforming societies, creating sustainable economic growth, and enhancing quality of life,” he said, adding that the government is committed to fostering innovation that will benefit Zambia’s future.
The event also marked the launch of three significant publications: the 2022-2026 National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) Strategic Plan, a UN biogas technology assessment report for Zambia, and the “Trees in Sub-Saharan Landscape” research report.
Hon. Mutati commended the researchers, innovators, and young scientists whose work contributes to Zambia’s socio-economic progress.
NSTC Board Chairperson Professor Sody Munsaka reiterated the council’s dedication to nurturing scientific talent and research that addresses national challenges. He emphasized the NSTC’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for innovation in Zambia.
The ceremony awarded numerous individuals for their contributions to science and technology, with Minister Mutati noting the impact of merit awards in inspiring excellence and motivating Zambians to pursue ambitious goals in STEM and innovation fields.
