Zambia Police Wins 2nd Prize at 2024 Integrity Committee Awards
The Zambia Police Service was awarded second place at the 2024 Integrity Committee Awards, a ceremony recognizing outstanding government institutions in ethics and anti-corruption efforts. The awards, held at the Kenneth Kaunda Wing of the Mulungushi Conference Centre, were a highlight of this year’s Chief Executive Officers’ Forum.
This year’s forum, themed “Mainstreaming National Values and Principles: Towards a Corruption-Free Zambia,” drew leaders from various government bodies to celebrate strides in promoting ethical governance.
The awards ceremony was attended by Secretary to the Cabinet Patrick Kangwa, who emphasized the importance of personal integrity in governance. In his keynote address, he called on Zambians to adopt the slogan “Corruption-Free Begins with Me,” encouraging individuals to take personal responsibility in fighting corruption. “We must combat corruption vigorously to protect resources that are vital for the nation’s growth and development,” he stated, urging citizens and leaders alike to resist practices such as fraud, theft, and embezzlement.
The Ministry of Technology and Science won the top prize, while Zambia Police Service took second place, and the University Teaching Hospital earned third. These institutions were honored for their commitment to upholding government policies and serving the public with integrity.
Individual achievements in integrity were also spotlighted. Chief Inspector Osward Silungwe, of the Victim Support Unit at Central Division Headquarters in Kabwe, was awarded the ACC Director’s Award.
Chief Inspector Silungwe was recognized for his bravery in rejecting a K12,500 bribe intended to drop a child assault case. His actions led to the suspect’s arrest and conviction, setting a powerful example of ethical conduct within the Zambia Police.
Mrs. Monica Chipanta Mwansa, Acting Director-General of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), also addressed the forum. She reiterated the importance of instilling national values and ethical principles across institutions to achieve a corruption-free Zambia.
“Embracing these principles can guide institutions in their corruption prevention efforts,” she said, emphasizing the role of integrity in national development.
