Mining Insaka Praised as Strategic Driver for Economic Growth

The Advocates for National Development and Democracy (ANDD) have lauded the recent Zambia Mining and Investment Insaka as a significant step towards advancing mining development and spurring economic growth in the country.

In a statement, ANDD Executive Director Samuel Banda emphasized that the event, which was held last week, provided a platform for key players in the mining industry, including government officials, top executives, and investment strategists, to collaborate on ideas and strategies aimed at boosting the sector.

“We are pleased to report that the 2024 Zambia Mining and Investment Insaka was a resounding success. We commend the Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development for organizing such a pivotal event that brought together critical stakeholders in the mining sector,” Mr. Banda said.

He also acknowledged the support of Vedanta Resources, through Konkola Copper Mines Plc (KCM), which donated $200,000 as the event’s main sponsor. He said this financial contribution was key to ensuring the event’s success and highlighted Vedanta’s commitment to fostering growth in Zambia’s mining industry.

“KCM, under Vedanta’s management, played a significant role by contributing $200,000 to sponsor the Mining Indaba. This investment demonstrates Vedanta’s dedication to boosting mining development, which is vital for achieving Zambia’s goal of increasing copper production to 3 million metric tonnes annually by 2031,” Mr. Banda added.

The Insaka, held in Lusaka, attracted industry leaders and stakeholders who shared innovative ideas aimed at tackling the challenges facing the mining sector and driving future growth. Mr. Banda stressed that such platforms are crucial for addressing the country’s economic challenges and finding practical solutions.

“In light of the ongoing energy crisis and its impact on the domestic economy, especially small businesses, we urge the government to organize an Economic Indaba. This would provide a forum to discuss and develop strategies to address the energy crisis and rising cost of living,” Mr. Banda said.

The ANDD reaffirmed its commitment to supporting sustainable development initiatives and called for continued collaboration among government, private sector, and civil society to achieve long-term economic solutions.
