Zambia’s Skills Development Commitment Showcased at WorldSkills Competition in Lyon
Honourable Felix Mutati, Minister of Technology and Science, representing President Hakainde Hichilema, has reaffirmed the Zambian government’s dedication to enhancing skills development across critical sectors such as Mining, Manufacturing, Tourism, and Agriculture.
Speaking upon his arrival at the 47th Eurexpo Lyon WorldSkills Competition, Mr. Mutati emphasized the importance of aligning skills development with private sector needs. He was welcomed by Zambia’s Ambassador to France, Her Excellency Ms. Judith Mulenga.
Mr. Mutati highlighted the significance of Zambia’s participation in the WorldSkills competition, noting that exposure to such global events sharpens the skills of young people and provides a platform for them to compete and excel.
“Competition perfects the skill, and the boys and girls who join us will compete as part of the process of enhancing their skills,” he said.
The Minister also expressed gratitude to WorldSkills International for awarding Zambia the opportunity to host the WorldSkills Africa competitions in April 2025 in Livingstone City. He emphasized that participating in the Lyon competition is a crucial learning experience to prepare for this significant event.
At the WorldSkills Competition, which runs from September 10 to 15, 2024, 11 Zambian competitors will showcase their expertise across 10 skill areas. These include information network cabling, bricklaying, carpentry, mechanical engineering CAD, concrete construction, digital construction, aircraft maintenance, welding, hairdressing, and restaurant service.
The WorldSkills Competition is the largest skills competition globally, organized biennially under the auspices of the WorldSkills International Movement, which serves as a premier platform for promoting excellence and developing skills for young professionals worldwide.
