Luanshya Mine Set to Resume Production as Redevelopment Gains Momentum

The Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development has announced that Luanshya Mine is scheduled to resume production at its upper section in August 2026, following the successful completion of the dewatering process.

According to the Ministry, production at the lower section of the mine is expected to begin in 2029 as part of the ongoing redevelopment of the 28 Shaft being undertaken by China Luanshya Mine (CLM).

The redevelopment of the New Luanshya Mine has been structured in two phases, with the first phase focusing on the upper mine and the second phase targeting the lower mine.

As of 27 March 2026, approximately 87.9 million cubic metres of water had been pumped out, paving the way for infrastructure development and construction works currently underway. The Ministry described the development as a significant step in the revitalisation of mining operations in Luanshya.

Another major milestone was the commissioning of the 580ML Pump Chamber on 31 March 2026, which is now operating efficiently and supporting ongoing redevelopment efforts.

Once fully operational, the Luanshya New Mine is projected to produce about 100,000 tonnes of copper annually by 2030, contributing significantly to Zambia’s national copper production targets.

The project has already generated 883 jobs through contractors, with employment expected to rise to around 3,000 at peak operations, thereby boosting economic activity in Luanshya and surrounding communities.

The redevelopment of the 28 Shaft represents a substantial investment of approximately US$710 million, covering the construction of new shaft systems, a concentrator plant and related infrastructure. To date, more than US$75 million has been invested in the project.

The Ministry also indicated that CLM is exploring potential collaboration with ZCCM Investments Holdings (ZCCM-IH) to develop additional mining opportunities in newly acquired areas.

Government reaffirmed its commitment to revitalising the mining sector, creating employment opportunities and ensuring that Zambia’s mineral resources contribute meaningfully to national development.

The progress at Luanshya Mine highlights Zambia’s continued efforts to increase copper production and achieve sustainable economic growth.
