Nigerian Bishops Call for Hope and Unity in Easter Message
The President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria has called on Nigerians to remain hopeful despite ongoing economic and security challenges, emphasising that “the dawn is coming” in his 2026 Easter message.
Delivering the message, Matthew Man-Oso Ndagoso said the celebration of Easter symbolises renewal and victory over hardship, urging citizens not to lose faith in the face of adversity.
He noted that many Nigerians continue to endure insecurity, including insurgency, kidnappings and armed banditry, which he attributed to years of poor leadership marked by corruption, division and lack of commitment to the common good.
Drawing parallels with the Christian journey from Good Friday to Easter Sunday, the Archbishop said the nation’s current struggles could give way to renewal and restoration, just as the resurrection of Jesus Christ brought hope after suffering.
“The dawn is coming. Don’t let go now, hold on to hope,” he said, encouraging citizens to remain steadfast in prayer and resilience.
The message also addressed the upcoming 2027 general elections, urging Nigerians to actively participate in the democratic process by registering and voting responsibly.
He warned against voter apathy, stressing that citizens have a moral duty to promote good governance by electing leaders of integrity and competence.
He further called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure credible and transparent elections, stating that every vote must count and be seen to count.
The Archbishop reaffirmed that the message of Easter offers assurance that suffering is not permanent, expressing confidence that Nigeria will overcome its current challenges and move towards peace and prosperity.
He concluded by wishing Nigerians a joyful Easter celebration and praying for comfort for those affected by hardship and loss.
