Livingstone Gets Solar Streetlights to Improve Safety and Night Economy
The Ministry of Tourism has commissioned 976 solar-powered streetlights in Livingstone, marking a major milestone in efforts to modernise the country’s tourism capital.
The project, valued at over ZMW 24.3 million, was implemented under the Livingstone Town Centre Development Programme (LTCDP) as part of a broader push to enhance infrastructure, safety and economic activity in the city.
Tourism Minister Rodney Sikumba described the initiative as a transformative investment aimed at improving public safety and positioning Livingstone as a smart and sustainable tourism destination.
“This milestone demonstrates Government’s resolve to deliver tangible development that improves lives while strengthening Livingstone’s status as Zambia’s tourism capital,” he said during the commissioning ceremony.
The project forms part of the Green, Resilient and Transformational Tourism Development Project (GREAT-TDP), supported by the World Bank. It seeks to upgrade key infrastructure, enhance visitor experience and promote inclusive economic growth in major tourism destinations.
Mr Sikumba noted that the initiative aligns with the development agenda of Hakainde Hichilema, which prioritises tourism as a driver of economic growth, job creation and community empowerment.
The installation of solar-powered streetlights is expected to improve safety and security, support the development of a 24-hour economy and reduce electricity costs for the local authority, while also advancing clean energy use and climate resilience.
Livingstone Deputy Mayor Robert Wandila called on residents and businesses to safeguard the infrastructure, stressing the importance of community ownership in maintaining public investments.
He urged stakeholders in the tourism sector to take advantage of the improved infrastructure to develop innovative tourism products that can boost the city’s competitiveness.
The LTCDP also includes other ongoing and planned projects such as road rehabilitation, development of cycle lanes and city landscaping, all aimed at revitalising Livingstone’s urban environment.
Mr Sikumba further said that the commissioning of the solar streetlights represents a significant step in Zambia’s broader strategy to strengthen its tourism sector while improving the quality of life for citizens.
