Mount Makulu Secondary School Wins ZRA Smart Voices Debate Competition

Mount Makulu Secondary School has emerged as the winner of the second season of the Smart Voices Debate Competition organised by the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA).

The competition, designed to promote tax awareness among learners, brought together 12 secondary schools from Chongwe, Chilanga, Kafue and Lusaka districts.

Mount Makulu Secondary School secured victory after scoring 1035 points, narrowly defeating Mukamambo II Girls Secondary School, which scored 978 points in the final debate held in Lusaka.

Speaking during the final event, Director of Secondary Education at the Ministry of Education, Yvonne Chulu, said the initiative has helped enhance learners’ understanding of the role played by the Zambia Revenue Authority in national development.

She noted that the programme effectively bridges the gap between civic responsibility and tax awareness among pupils.

Chulu commended ZRA for its continued support and investment in the programme, stating that the initiative motivates and encourages learners to develop a deeper understanding of taxation and national development.

Meanwhile, Laban Simbeye, Acting Director for Executive Support at the Zambia Revenue Authority, delivered remarks on behalf of the Commissioner General, reaffirming the authority’s commitment to strengthening tax education among citizens.

“As tax ambassadors and future taxpayers, your actions are a testament to your patriotism to Zambia,” Simbeye said.

The debate attracted attendance from District Education Board Secretaries, head teachers and teachers who witnessed the final contest.

The debate motion for the competition was: “This House believes that income earned by writers, composers, visual artists and sculptors from the sale of works that directly promote Zambian culture should be exempted from taxation.”

The Smart Voices Debate platform is part of ZRA’s broader initiative aimed at educating young people about the importance of taxation and its contribution to national development.
