Zambia Partners with AGRA to Transform Agriculture
The Government of the Republic of Zambia and the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) have signed a Host Country Agreement in Lusaka, marking a major step in strengthening collaboration to transform the agricultural sector.
The Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Reuben Mtolo, MP, represented the Government of the Republic of Zambia, while the President of AGRA, Mrs Alice Ruhweza, delivered remarks on behalf of the organisation.
During the ceremony, Hon. Mtolo described the agreement as a significant milestone in Zambia’s efforts to develop a resilient, inclusive, and productive agricultural sector.
He noted that AGRA’s full operations in Zambia will improve coordination with the Government, provide direct support to farmers, strengthen value chains, and attract investment aligned with national priorities.
The Minister highlighted that agriculture remains central to Zambia’s economic growth, food security, and employment agenda.
He added that AGRA’s work will complement Government initiatives to modernise the sector, including reforms under the Farmer Input Support Programme, as well as programmes aimed at expanding access to affordable agricultural finance and improving market systems.
Mrs Ruhweza reaffirmed AGRA’s commitment to working with the Government to advance sustainable food systems in Zambia.
She emphasised the organisation’s focus on strengthening seed systems, promoting climate-resilient agriculture, supporting agricultural research, and catalysing private sector participation across key value chains.
Both parties expressed confidence that the strengthened partnership would deliver tangible results for farmers and rural communities across the country.
On behalf of the President of the Republic of Zambia, Hakainde Hichilema, the Minister conveyed appreciation to AGRA for selecting Zambia as a host country and trusted partner in driving agricultural development.
