Defence and Security Talks Open in Arusha, Tanzania

The 4th session of the United Republic of Tanzania and Republic of Zambia Joint Permanent Commission on Defence and Security has officially opened in Arusha, Tanzania.

Speaking at the Senior Officials Meeting this morning, Zambia’s Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security Permanent Secretary, Mr Dickson Matembo, said the session provides an excellent opportunity for the two neighbouring countries to strengthen their relations.

Mr Matembo highlighted that Zambia and Tanzania are collaborating on several joint economic projects, which have further enhanced bilateral ties. 

He cited initiatives including the Tanzania-Zambia Railways Authority (TAZARA), the Tanzania-Zambia Mafuta (TAZAMA) Pipelines Limited, and the Tanzania-Zambia Power Interconnector, among others. 

Mr Matembo added that these joint ventures reflect the strong bonds between the two nations and support cross-border trade and regional integration.

Tanzania’s Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs, Mr Ally Gugu, affirmed his country’s readiness to work with Zambia across all areas of cooperation. 

He noted that the 4th session of the Joint Permanent Commission on Defence and Security provides a valuable platform for constructive engagement on issues of mutual concern.

The Zambian delegation includes prominent officials such as Zambia Air Force Commander Lt Gen Oscar Nyoni, Inspector General of Police Mr Graphel Musamba, Zambia Correctional Service Commissioner General Mr Frederick Chilukutu, Drug Enforcement Commission Director General Mr Nason Banda, and Ministry of Defence Director for Research, Planning and Projects Mrs Ireen Musonda Habasimbi.
