Zambia Shines on Global Stage at India’s Surajkund Cultural Festival
Zambia’s cultural heritage is gaining international recognition after two members of the Zambia Correctional Service Theatre and Arts (ZACOSTA) were selected to represent the country at the prestigious 39th Surajkund International Crafts Mela in India.
Wardress Tasila Zulu and Anthony Mwansa are part of the Zambian Cultural Troupe participating in the globally acclaimed festival, which is being held at the Surajkund Mela Ground in Faridabad, Haryana, from 31 January to 15 February 2026.
Widely regarded as one of the world’s largest celebrations of living heritage, art and culture, the Surajkund Mela brings together artisans, performers and cultural troupes from more than 44 countries, alongside thousands of Indian craftspeople. The event promotes cultural exchange under the theme of taking culture from the “local to the global” stage.
Organised by the Surajkund Mela Authority and Haryana Tourism, in collaboration with India’s Union Ministries of Tourism, Culture, Textiles and External Affairs, the festival provides a high-profile platform for both Indian and international artists to showcase their traditions to a global audience.
For ZACOSTA and the Zambia Correctional Service (ZCS), the participation of Wardress Zulu and Mr Mwansa marks a significant milestone, highlighting Zambia’s cultural identity at a world-renowned cultural festival.
Adding to the achievement, the two representatives have been entrusted with leadership roles within Team Zambia at the Mela. Wardress Zulu has been appointed Secretary, while Mr Mwansa is serving as Time Keeper, reflecting the confidence placed in their discipline and professionalism.
The Surajkund Mela Authority has continued to ensure a well-coordinated and supportive environment for participating artists, reinforcing the festival’s role as a hub for international artistic collaboration.
As Zambia’s music, dance and traditions resonate across India, ZACOSTA’s presence at Surajkund stands as a powerful testament to the country’s vibrant cultural heritage and its growing global appeal.
The Zambian delegation was seen off at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport on Thursday by ZACOSTA President and Deputy Commissioner Daniel Chiwela. The group, organised by the Ministry of Tourism, comprises 11 dancers and artists, accompanied by three officials.
Mr Chiwela welcomed the continued collaboration between the Zambia Correctional Service and the Ministry of Tourism in promoting cultural initiatives.
“We are genuinely elated by the strong collaboration between the Zambia Correctional Service and the Ministry of Tourism in support of cultural programmes. It is encouraging that the Ministry has consistently involved ZCS and ZACOSTA in major cultural events, particularly the Livingstone International Cultural and Arts Festival,” he said.
He added: “We are truly grateful for this continued partnership and look forward to strengthening our collaboration in celebrating Zambia’s rich cultural heritage.”
