ZMW 132 Million Road Upgrade Set to Improve Access, Jobs and Daily Life in Livingstone

The Ministry of Tourism has awarded Kailjee Construction Zambia Limited a contract worth approximately ZMW 132 million for the rehabilitation and upgrading of selected city centre roads in Livingstone, in a move aimed at strengthening tourism-supporting infrastructure in Zambia’s tourism capital.

The works, to be undertaken under the Zambia Green, Resilient and Transformational Tourism Development Project (GREAT-TDP), will cover about 8.31 kilometres of key urban roads, which will be upgraded to bituminous standard. The project forms part of a wider infrastructure programme financed through a US$100 million World Bank loan facility targeting priority tourism destinations across the country.

Speaking at the contract signing ceremony held in Lusaka, Ministry of Tourism Permanent Secretary Mr Evans Muhanga described the project as a strategic investment that will significantly improve urban mobility, accessibility and the overall visitor experience in Livingstone.

Mr Muhanga said the rehabilitation works will modernise the city’s road network, improve access to tourism facilities and services, and enhance Livingstone’s competitiveness as a leading regional and international tourism destination.

He explained that the project will be implemented over a nine-month period in two phases. The first phase will focus on design works as well as environmental and social impact assessments, while the second phase will involve full construction works to upgrade the roads to modern bituminous standards.

The Permanent Secretary emphasised that improved road infrastructure is a critical driver of economic growth, job creation and efficient service delivery, particularly for Livingstone, which attracts thousands of local and international visitors each year.

Mr Muhanga reaffirmed the Government of the Republic of Zambia’s commitment to delivering high-quality and sustainable infrastructure projects that support tourism development and contribute to national economic growth.

“Allow me to reaffirm the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring that this project is delivered on time, within budget and to the highest quality standards. The people of Livingstone and Zambia at large are counting on us, and together we must deliver, as our 2026 slogan states: Commit, Execute, Deliver,” he said.

He congratulated Kailjee Construction Zambia Limited on being awarded the contract and urged the company to maintain professionalism, adhere strictly to specifications and timelines, and work closely with all stakeholders to ensure the successful completion of the project.

In response, Kailjee Construction Zambia Limited Project Engineer Mr Tanaka Charumbira thanked the Ministry for the confidence placed in the company and assured Government of its commitment to delivering the project in line with agreed timelines, quality standards and all stipulated guidelines.
