BoZ Sets 31 March 2026 Deadline for Old Currency Exchange
The Bank of Zambia (BoZ) has reminded the public that the cash exchange period for old banknotes will end on 31 March 2026, after which the old currency will no longer be legal tender.
In a statement, Ms Besnat Mwanza, BoZ’s Assistant Director – Communications, recalled that the central bank launched a new currency family on 31 March 2025, consisting of six banknotes and six coins. The new currency has since been circulating alongside the old notes to give the public sufficient time to exchange their cash.
The exchange window is provided for under the Bank of Zambia (Withdrawal and Exchange of Currency) Regulations, 2025, Statutory Instrument No. 9 of 2025, issued by the Minister of Finance and National Planning.
“Effective 1 April 2026, old banknotes will no longer be legal tender and will not be accepted for transactions or exchange with the new currency series,” Ms Mwanza said.
The public is urged to exchange all old banknotes before the deadline at designated cash exchange points. Exchanges can be made at any commercial bank or NATSAVE branch across the country at the same face value.
BoZ encourages individuals and businesses still holding old notes to act promptly to avoid inconvenience once the exchange period ends.
