Lawn and Order: How to Keep Your Grass in Check During Rainy Summers

January sits at the peak of summer, a season when gardens come into their own. Lawns turn green, trees offer shade and outdoor spaces become hubs for family gatherings, barbecues and quiet moments in the breeze. Yet alongside the sunshine, summer also brings heavy rainfall, sudden storms and the risk of soggy, overworked lawns.

According to Brad Barthorpe, Sales Manager – Distributor Africa at Husqvarna South Africa, rain is both a blessing and a challenge for homeowners. While it helps revive dry soil and encourages lush growth, too much water at once can compact the ground, encourage weeds and create ideal conditions for pests and lawn diseases.

To help homeowners protect their lawns during wet summer months, Husqvarna has shared practical tips to keep grass healthy, resilient and looking its best.

Let Your Lawn Breathe

One of the biggest problems during rainy periods is soil compaction. When soil becomes tightly packed, water and nutrients struggle to reach the roots. Aerating the lawn by creating small holes in the soil improves drainage and allows air and nutrients to penetrate more effectively. For most households, a simple manual aerator is sufficient, while larger properties can benefit from mechanical aerator attachments.

Level Out Water Traps

Low-lying areas of the lawn often collect water after heavy rain. These patches can be improved by applying a sandy loam topdressing to level the surface. This not only improves drainage but also prevents future pooling that can damage grass roots.

Be Patient After Rainfall

Walking or mowing on a waterlogged lawn can do more harm than good. Allow the grass to dry for a day or two before resuming normal activities. Prolonged moisture can also attract fungi, mould and insects, so it is important to regularly inspect the lawn and address problems early before they spread.

Cut at the Correct Height

Cutting grass too short may seem like a time-saver, but it weakens the lawn and leaves it vulnerable to weeds. A slightly higher cutting height encourages deeper roots and denser growth. Adjustable mowers make it easier to maintain the correct height, while robotic mowers offer a hands-free solution that keeps lawns neat throughout the season.

Stay Ahead of Weeds

Weeds flourish in wet conditions and can quickly take over if ignored. Regular weeding, targeted trimming and the use of suitable weed control products help keep unwanted growth at bay without damaging surrounding grass.

Feed for Strength

A slow-release fertiliser suited to local conditions provides steady nourishment during the hottest months. This strengthens the grass, improves colour and helps the lawn recover more quickly from heavy rain and heat stress.

“Our gardens are an extension of our homes, especially in summer,” Barthorpe says. “With a little extra care during the rainy season, lawns can remain healthy, strong and a source of pride.”
