10 New Tractors to Make Lusaka Cleaner and Safer – Minister Sialubalo
The Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Honourable Gift Sialubalo, MP, has officially handed over ten four-wheel-drive tractors with hydraulic tipping trailers to constituencies across Lusaka City, marking a major step in strengthening solid waste management under the Cash for Work Programme.
Speaking at the handover ceremony in Matero Constituency, Minister Sialubalo urged communities to end indiscriminate waste disposal and take active responsibility for protecting the environment.
“The deployment of these tractors will improve the collection and transportation of daily waste, particularly in peri-urban areas where service delivery gaps exist,” he said. “Communities should experience visible improvements in cleanliness, environmental safety, and public health outcomes, consistent with Government’s commitment to improving the quality of life for all citizens.”
The tractors, managed by the Lusaka Integrated Solid Waste Management Company, will support Cash for Work activities while complementing routine waste collection services citywide.
Minister Sialubalo emphasised that the initiative reflects Government’s commitment to inclusive development, equitable service provision, and the promotion of a culture of cleanliness.
Permanent Secretary for Technical Services, Mr Nicholas Phiri, noted that the Cash for Work Programme has been aligned with solid waste management priorities, while Lusaka Integrated Solid Waste Management CEO, Mr Imuwana Mwanamwalye, described the acquisition of the tractors as a milestone in enhancing waste management efficiency across Lusaka.
The Minister added that proactive measures, such as garbage recycling and community participation, will not only improve the city’s cleanliness but also create jobs and support Zambia’s vision of a clean, healthy, productive, and resilient nation.
