San Marino Becomes ICCROM’s 139th Member State

The International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM) has officially welcomed the Republic of San Marino as its 139th Member State, marking a significant expansion of its global network dedicated to safeguarding cultural heritage.

The membership was formalised during a ceremony held at the Embassy of San Marino in Rome, where ICCROM’s Director-General, Aruna Francesca Maria Gujral, and H.E. 

Ambassador Daniela Rotondaro signed a Letter of Intent in the presence of Luca Beccari, San Marino’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Political Affairs, International Economic Cooperation and Digital Transition.

The agreement underscores a shared commitment to strengthening cooperation in cultural heritage conservation through capacity-building, knowledge exchange and strategic policy engagement.

Welcoming San Marino, Ms Gujral highlighted the country’s unique heritage and strong institutional coordination as an exemplary model in heritage management.

“San Marino’s membership will not only promote and strengthen the awareness of its rich cultural heritage but also enable us to showcase how effective inter-disciplinarity between local and national institutions can deliver meaningful impact,” she said. “By working together, we can ensure that San Marino’s heritage remains vibrant, community-centred, and a living expression of identity and social cohesion.”

San Marino’s accession provides momentum for deeper collaboration in heritage stewardship, innovation and capacity-building. ICCROM stated that the partnership aligns with its mission to support Member States in protecting heritage in all its forms while reinforcing the idea that culture is central to sustainable development.

With this new membership, ICCROM and San Marino reaffirm their shared belief that safeguarding cultural heritage is essential for present and future generations, contributing to identity, social cohesion and resilience.
