Zambia and Mozambique Deepen Bilateral Cooperation Through High-Level Talks
President Hakainde Hichilema of the Republic of Zambia and His Excellency President Daniel Francisco Chapo of the Republic of Mozambique today held Official Talks at State House in Lusaka, reaffirming the deep-rooted friendship and commitment to strengthened cooperation between the two neighbouring nations.
The discussions focused on enhancing collaboration in areas of economic development, trade, energy, and regional integration, while reaffirming shared commitments to peace and security across Southern Africa.
President Hichilema underscored the long-standing historical and cultural bonds between Zambia and Mozambique, noting that their relationship predates independence. He highlighted Zambia’s determination to deepen these ties through greater economic and infrastructural collaboration.
“Peace, security, and stability are the foundation for sustainable development,” President Hichilema stated, commending Mozambique’s progress in restoring peace in Cabo Delgado Province.
He reaffirmed Zambia’s unwavering support for Mozambique’s peace and security initiatives and expressed gratitude for Mozambique’s assistance in supplying electricity during Zambia’s drought periods.
The Zambian Head of State also thanked President Chapo for accepting his invitation to attend Zambia’s 61st Independence Day celebrations on 24th October, describing the visit as a symbol of brotherhood and solidarity.
In his remarks, President Chapo expressed appreciation for Zambia’s historic support during Mozambique’s liberation struggle and emphasised the need to deepen economic cooperation and trade.
He called for increased efforts towards industrialisation and self-reliance to complement the political independence both nations enjoy.
The bilateral talks concluded with the signing of an agreement establishing the One Stop Border Post (OSBP) at Chanida–Cassacatiza, a major step towards enhancing cross-border trade efficiency and regional integration.
President Chapo is in Zambia on a Working Visit from 22nd to 24th October 2025, at the invitation of President Hichilema.
