Gov’t Launches Livingstone Development Programme to Boost Tourism

The Government has reaffirmed its commitment to positioning tourism at the centre of national development with the launch of the Livingstone Town Centre Development Programme.

The initiative, unveiled by Minister of Tourism Rodney Sikumba alongside World Bank Country Manager Dr Achim Fock and Livingstone Mayor Constance Muleabai, will see 8.3 kilometres of roads upgraded, 976 streetlights installed, and public spaces modernised to transform the city into a vibrant 24-hour tourism hub.

Speaking at the event, Honourable Sikumba emphasised the sector’s vital role in job creation, community empowerment, and inclusive growth.

“This initiative stands as a testament to the New Dawn Administration’s commitment to delivering tangible development outcomes, enhancing Zambia’s tourism profile and uplifting communities,” he said.

Dr Fock reiterated the World Bank’s support for repositioning Livingstone as more than a stopover destination, highlighting its potential to create benefits across Zambia and neighbouring countries in the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier region.

“By further improving the attractiveness of Livingstone, the city can generate positive spillovers for Zambia, Zimbabwe, and beyond,” he noted.

The programme reflects President Hakainde Hichilema’s directive to place tourism at the heart of Zambia’s development agenda, with the government aiming to unlock the sector’s full potential for sustainable economic growth.
