Zambia’s Urea Fertiliser Plant Set to Produce 300,000 Tonnes Annually
Zambia is poised to strengthen its agricultural production capacity following the launch of initial raw material feedstock loading for the Ammonia and Urea test production at United Capital Fertiliser’s plant in Chilanga District, Lusaka Province.
The event was officiated today by Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet for Finance and Economic Development, Mr Siazongo Siakalenge. The USD 600 million investment is expected to produce 180,000 tonnes of ammonia and 300,000 tonnes of urea fertiliser annually, sufficient to meet both domestic and regional demand.
Once operational, the facility is projected to create up to 2,500 direct and indirect jobs, enhancing Zambia’s competitiveness in the agricultural sector and contributing significantly to socio-economic growth. Production of urea fertiliser is scheduled to commence by December this year.
Mr Siakalenge noted that local production will help reduce fertiliser costs while supporting the Government’s “10:1:1 strategy”, which aims to achieve 10 million metric tonnes of wheat and 1 million metric tonnes of soya beans annually by 2027.
He reiterated Government’s commitment to fostering a conducive environment for investment and acknowledged the vital role of private sector partners such as the Wonderful Group and United Capital Fertiliser.
United Capital Fertiliser Chairperson, Mr Chance Kabaghe, emphasised that the D-compound and urea plant expansions are intended to serve not only Zambia but the entire region.
