Angola Accelerates Road Infrastructure with €85M Boost from AFC
Angola has secured a major boost to its road infrastructure development, following the disbursement of €75 million from the Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) under an €85 million sovereign facility aimed at transforming the country’s transportation network.
The funding will support the construction of 186 priority bridges and key upgrades to the national road system, forming part of Angola’s National Development Plan (2023–2027).
According to the Ministry of Finance, the initiative is expected to cut transport costs, ease market access for farmers, and create about 900 direct jobs, especially in underserved areas.
Solely arranged and financed by AFC, the transaction marks a milestone within a broader €381.5 million infrastructure package. The project also involves partnerships with the U.S. Export-Import Bank, Standard Chartered Bank, Portuguese EPC contractor Conduril, and U.S.-based bridge supplier Acrow.
AFC President and CEO Samaila Zubairu hailed the investment as a “catalytic move” that will connect remote regions, promote regional trade, and elevate the quality of life for millions of Angolans.
“This disbursement demonstrates AFC’s unique capacity to structure and fund impactful infrastructure projects that address critical national priorities and accelerate economic transformation,” he said.
Beyond road improvements, the project is designed to fortify Angola’s transport system against climate risks, improve regional integration, and streamline logistics across Southern and Central Africa.
The AFC reaffirmed its commitment to working with African governments to deliver sustainable, high-impact infrastructure solutions that address the continent’s pressing development needs.
