Mining Sector, ZESCO Partner to Modernise Zambia’s Power Grid

Zambia’s energy landscape is set for a major transformation as ZESCO, in partnership with mining giants First Quantum Minerals (FQM) and Barrick, embarks on a landmark project to modernise the power infrastructure in the North-Western Province. The initiative, also supported by technical partners Zutari and ADC, aims to stabilise the 330kV electricity network and enable future integration of renewable energy.

As part of the project’s first phase, FQM will install advanced Static Synchronous Compensators (STATCOMs) in Solwezi and Kalumbila districts, key mining hubs experiencing rising power demands. These devices will help maintain voltage stability amid growing energy consumption from major projects such as FQM’s Kansanshi S3 expansion and Barrick’s Lumwana Superpit development.

FQM Country Director Anthony Mukutuma described the initiative as a strategic investment in Zambia’s long-term energy and economic resilience.

“Our commitment goes beyond meeting our own power needs, it’s about laying the groundwork for sustainable national development,” Mukutuma said. “Technologies like STATCOMs will support the integration of renewables such as solar and wind, which are vital for the future.”

Barrick is preparing for the second phase of the project, which involves upgrading transmission lines to further boost grid capacity. Barrick Zambia Country Manager Anthony Malenga underscored the significance of public-private collaboration in driving transformative infrastructure.

“With the right regulatory support, this partnership can catalyse a shift toward a more sustainable and inclusive energy sector,” he said.

ZESCO Managing Director Justin Loongo hailed the collaboration as a “game-changer,” noting that the investments not only enhance reliability but also open the door for greater renewable energy uptake.

“The involvement of mining companies in grid modernisation sets a powerful precedent for industry-led energy reform. It’s a win for economic growth, communities, and the environment,” Loongo added.

All infrastructure developed under this programme will remain under ZESCO’s ownership, reinforcing the central role of the national utility in delivering reliable, inclusive, and sustainable energy solutions.
