Trina Storage Earns First IEC 61508 Safety Certification in Energy Storage

Trina Storage, a business unit of Trinasolar, has become the first energy storage company globally to receive the prestigious IEC 61508 Functional Safety Process Certificate, awarded by UL Solutions.

The certification recognizes Trina Storage’s end-to-end safety management system and marks a major milestone in the pursuit of safer, more reliable energy storage solutions.

The certification ceremony was attended by Dr. Sheng Yun, Vice President of Trina Storage’s Product Research Institute, and Sam Wei, Global and Strategic Accounts Director at UL Solutions Greater China. This achievement has been validated by leading accreditation bodies including ANAB (U.S.) and the International Accreditation Forum (IAF).

IEC 61508 is the foundational international standard for functional safety, covering safety lifecycle processes from design to decommissioning. By meeting this rigorous standard, Trina Storage demonstrates its ability to proactively mitigate critical risks—such as thermal runaway and battery management system (BMS) failures—across all phases of product development and use.

“This certification validates our holistic functional safety management system and reflects Trina Storage’s engineering excellence,” said Dr. Sheng Yun. “We remain committed to advancing global safety standards and contributing to a secure energy future.”

UL Solutions’ Sam Wei noted that functional safety is essential for ensuring safe operations in increasingly complex energy systems. “We are proud to support Trina Storage in verifying their mitigation of potential safety risks,” he said.

Trina Storage continues to push the boundaries of energy innovation through integrated R&D and manufacturing, offering advanced smart energy solutions including PV modules, energy storage systems, and microgrids. As part of Trinasolar (688599.SH), the company is at the forefront of driving a net-zero future through intelligent power systems.
