Kalumbila Mine Tragedy Sparks Renewed Call for Worker Safety in Zambia
The Ministry of Labour and Social Security has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of a dump truck driver at Kalumbila Mine’s Sentinel Pit, calling it a stark reminder of the urgent need to strengthen safety protocols in Zambia’s mining sector.
The fatal incident occurred on June 21, when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle while descending into the pit. The truck struck a hole and later caught fire, resulting in the driver’s death.
In a press statement issued today, Ministry Spokesperson Mwaka Ndawa described the loss as devastating, noting that “the death of even a single worker in the line of duty is one too many.”
The Ministry has pledged to work closely with the Mine Safety Department and other authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and address the factors that led to the fatal accident.
“Mining is a cornerstone of our national economy, but it remains one of the most hazardous workplaces,” the Ministry said. “This incident is a harrowing reminder of the importance of enforcing strict Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) standards to prevent such tragedies.”
The Ministry reiterated its commitment to improving safety oversight and ensuring that mine operators across Zambia comply with the highest OSH standards to protect workers.
The statement concluded with condolences extended to the bereaved family, the company, and fellow workers during this time of mourning.
