Zambia’s Solar Revolution Gains Momentum as Mailo Plant Adds 25MW to National Grid

The Mailo Solar PV Power Plant in Chief Mailo’s Chiefdom, Serenje District, has successfully injected 25 megawatts (MW) of clean solar energy into Zambia’s national grid, following the completion and pre-commissioning of its first phase.

Developed through a partnership between Solar Century Africa and ZESCO Limited, the 110MW plant spans 204 hectares and marks a key milestone in Zambia’s push toward renewable energy and grid resilience.

The solar plant is central to the country’s agenda to diversify its energy mix and ensure energy security, a policy strongly championed by President Hakainde Hichilema.

Solar Century Africa Project Manager Eng. Gondai Munyana confirmed that the site clearing for the next phase will begin in July, with construction expected to start in September. Completion of mechanical works and testing for the second phase is targeted for mid-2026, while the third and largest phase (50MW) is expected to commission in 2027.

“This successful injection of 25MW is a major step forward for Zambia’s solar ambitions,” said Eng. Munyana. “We’re on schedule to support national energy needs while reducing reliance on hydroelectric sources.”

ZESCO’s Head of Renewables, Eng. Brian Kanyanga, emphasized the importance of the plant in addressing current power shortages: “Mailo Solar power plant is critical. It helps reduce pressure on our hydro plants and adds much-needed stability.”

He further stated that ZESCO’s role includes verifying designs and ensuring seamless integration of solar technology into the national grid—especially crucial given solar’s intermittent nature.

The Mailo plant is part of Zambia’s broader plan to achieve 1,000MW of solar energy by year-end, a goal aligned with the country’s long-term energy sustainability strategy. The project’s progress illustrates strong private sector confidence in ZESCO and the country’s renewable energy sector.
