Zambian Peacekeeper Killed in Central African Republic Ambush, Government Demands Justice

The Government of the Republic of Zambia has confirmed the death of a Zambian peacekeeper following an attack on a United Nations patrol mission in the Central African Republic (CAR) on June 20.

The peacekeeper succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained during the ambush in Am-Sissial, located in the volatile Vakaga prefecture.

In a press statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Minister Hon. Mulambo Haimbe, S.C., MP, expressed the government’s deepest sympathies to the bereaved family and the Zambian people, mourning the loss of a “dedicated peacekeeper.”

A second Zambian soldier was seriously injured during the same incident and is currently receiving medical treatment. The Ministry expressed hope for the injured peacekeeper’s full recovery and extended thoughts and prayers to his family.

The Zambian government has called on authorities in the Central African Republic to launch a full investigation and bring those responsible to justice in accordance with international law.

The statement also conveyed appreciation to Her Excellency Ms. Valentine Rugwabiza, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Head of MINUSCA, for her solidarity and ongoing support.

“Zambia remains resolute in its commitment to advancing international peace and security as a foundation for sustainable development at both regional and global levels,” the statement reads.

The Zambian peacekeepers were serving under the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA), which continues to face threats from armed groups despite international efforts to restore stability in the country.
