President Hichilema Declares End to National Mourning for Late President Lungu

President Hakainde Hichilema has formally announced the end of the national mourning period for Zambia’s sixth Republican President, Mr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, citing the need for the nation to return to normalcy after two weeks of tribute, reflection, and unresolved negotiations surrounding his burial.

In a televised address to the nation, President Hichilema expressed deep gratitude to Zambians, the Church, traditional leaders, and the international community, particularly South Africa, for their support during the mourning period.

He acknowledged the efforts of diplomats and government officials who worked tirelessly to reach an understanding with the Lungu family regarding state funeral arrangements.

“By last Sunday, a mutual understanding had been achieved and was publicly affirmed in South Africa. In line with this, we extended the mourning period and prepared to receive President Lungu’s remains on June 18 for a state funeral and burial on June 23,” said President Hichilema.

However, the President disclosed that the Lungu family reversed this agreement at the last minute, leading to the cancellation of repatriation ceremonies organized with full military honours by the South African Defence Force. President Hichilema apologized to President Cyril Ramaphosa and the people of South Africa for the disruption.

“Our country cannot afford a state of indefinite mourning. Therefore, as of today, the 19th of June 2025, this particular national mourning period is officially over,” the President declared, while affirming that former President Lungu should be laid to rest in Zambia with full honours.

He appealed for national unity, calm, and adherence to the rule of law during this sensitive period. “No amount of lawlessness will be tolerated. Let us remain united as a nation and maintain the peace we are known for.”

President Hichilema concluded by reaffirming the government’s readiness for further engagement with the Lungu family and praying for the peaceful repose of the late President’s soul.
