Illegal Mining Threatens Safety at KCM’s Nchanga Mine
Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) has sounded the alarm over an escalating crisis at its Nchanga Underground Mine in Chingola, where illegal mining activities are putting thousands of lives and critical mining infrastructure at serious risk.
In a strongly worded statement released Tuesday, KCM expressed grave concern about unauthorized miners operating directly above the underground mine, threatening the structural integrity of one of the company’s core assets and jeopardizing the safety of its workforce.
“Immediate and decisive action is critical to prevent a catastrophic loss of life,” said KCM Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, Dr. John Kunda. “The safety of our workforce and environment is our highest priority, and we must act now.”
The company is calling on law enforcement agencies and community leaders to take swift action against illegal mining activities, stressing that urgent intervention is needed to avert a disaster.
Nchanga Underground Mine is a cornerstone of KCM’s operations and a major contributor to the mining economy of Chingola. Its disruption could have far-reaching consequences not only for KCM but also for the broader mining industry and Zambia’s economy.
KCM, a subsidiary of Vedanta Resources, reiterated its commitment to safety, legal compliance, and sustainable mining practices. It has urged authorities to secure the area and preserve the integrity of national mining infrastructure.
