Zambia Ramps Up Climate Research Efforts at Biannual ZCCRN Meeting
The Ministry of Green Economy and Environment (MGEE), in partnership with the Supporting Preparedness for Article 6 Cooperation (SPAR6C) Program, hosted the Zambia Climate Change Research Network (ZCCRN) biannual meeting last Friday.
The event brought together government representatives, academics, researchers, and students to define Zambia’s climate change research priorities and enhance readiness for carbon market participation under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.
The meeting served as a critical platform to strengthen national research capacity, update local climate impact data, and align future studies with Zambia’s policy development goals.
The ZCCRN, part of the global Community of Practice for Article 6 Implementing Countries (CoP-ASIC), aims to bridge academia, government, and the private sector to foster long-term national expertise in climate governance.
“We are committed to producing high-quality research that informs policy and builds resilience in local communities,” said Mr. Herrick Mwewa, Principal Climate Change Officer at MGEE, during the opening address.
Research representatives from key institutions, including the University of Zambia, Copperbelt University, and the Zambia Institute for Policy Analysis and Research, outlined top priorities in climate mitigation and carbon markets.
Meanwhile, six students under the SPAR6C Research Mentorship Program (RMP) presented their ongoing research for expert review.
Led by the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) and implemented in Zambia with the support of GFA Consulting Group and UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre, the SPAR6C Program is part of a global initiative funded by Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK).
