New Guidelines Set to Transform Zambia’s Cotton Industry, Says TrustAfrica
TrustAfrica has commended the Government of Zambia for unveiling the Decent Work Guidelines for the cotton sub-sector, calling it a major step forward in promoting fair labour practices and sustainability in the agricultural industry.
Beatrice Makwenda, Southern Africa Programme Officer at TrustAfrica, praised the collaborative effort behind the new policy, which was developed with input from civil society, farmers, industry players, and regulatory bodies.
She noted the significant role of the Reclaim Sustainability! Programme—implemented in Zambia since 2021 by TrustAfrica and its partner Solidaridad—in shaping the priorities addressed in the guidelines.
“This is more than just a document—it’s a blueprint for ethical, inclusive, and sustainable business,” Makwenda said. “It addresses vital concerns including fair wages, chemical safety, and workplace protections.”
She underscored that the guidelines emerged from years of dialogue and research involving all key stakeholders in the sector, and that they signal a promising future for Zambia’s cotton industry—from production to processing.
Makwenda expressed optimism that these principles, once implemented, will lead to improved working conditions, stronger civil society engagement, and long-term economic empowerment for farmers and workers alike.
TrustAfrica reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that sustainability becomes not just a goal, but a lived reality across Zambia’s cotton value chain.
