President Hichilema Leads National Thanksgiving at Cathedral, Credits God for Zambia’s Recovery from Historic Drought

Today, the nation of Zambia came together in a heartfelt display of unity and gratitude at the Anglican Cathedral of The Holy Cross, where President Hakainde Hichilema led a National Day of Thanksgiving following the country’s recovery from the worst drought in over a century.

Speaking before a congregation of church leaders, government officials, and citizens, President Hichilema expressed deep appreciation to God for His “unmerited favor” in delivering the nation through the climate crisis and blessing it with abundant rainfall and a successful harvest this season.

“With humility and joy, we thank Him for navigating us out of the worst drought in over a century,” said President Hichilema. “The drought taught us the importance of innovation, unity, and resilience in the face of adversity. We emerged stronger and more determined to overcome challenges together.”

The thanksgiving ceremony was marked by prayer, worship, and a renewed commitment to national solidarity. The President emphasized the value of peace and unity that continues to characterize Zambia and called on the nation to trust in divine guidance, quoting Proverbs 3:5: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.”

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to spiritual and social development, Hichilema pledged deeper collaboration with the church to address the country’s pressing challenges and foster a morally grounded society.

“As government, we are committed to working hand-in-hand with the church to build a spiritually healthy nation,” he stated. “Together, we can achieve great things and create a brighter future for all Zambians.”

The service concluded with prayers for continued peace, prosperity, and God’s favor upon the nation.
