Merck Foundation CEO Congratulates Tanzania’s President on UAE’s ‘Mother of the Nation’ Honor

Senator Dr. Rasha Kelej, CEO of Merck Foundation, has extended heartfelt congratulations to President Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania for being awarded the distinguished Mother of the Nation Order by H.H. Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates.

Describing the recognition as a tribute to President Hassan’s visionary leadership and commitment to development, Dr. Kelej said: “Your Excellency Mama Samia, you are More Than a Mother. This award is a powerful testament to your tireless efforts to foster prosperity, equity, and social cohesion in Tanzania.”

Under President Hassan’s patronage, Merck Foundation and the Government of Tanzania have successfully collaborated to build healthcare capacity nationwide. So far, 78 scholarships have been awarded to Tanzanian doctors in 44 critical specialties, strengthening care delivery in underserved areas.

The recognition follows the successful hosting of the 11th Edition of the Merck Foundation Africa Asia Luminary in Dar es Salaam last year. The high-level conference was inaugurated by President Hassan and attended by First Ladies from 15 countries, ministers, health experts, and media professionals, drawing over 10,000 participants from more than 70 countries.

Dr. Kelej commended the President’s dedication to health, girl education, and women’s empowerment. “She is not only a great leader but a role model for African women. At Merck Foundation, we are proud to support her transformative agenda,” she added.

The Merck Foundation continues to deepen its footprint in Tanzania and across Africa, working towards a healthier and more inclusive future for all.
