FQM Praised for Empowering Zambians Through Local Talent and Business Support

First Quantum Minerals (FQM) has been lauded by the Zambian government for championing home-grown solutions and uplifting local communities in North-Western Province. The praise came during the 2025 Labour Day celebrations, themed “Zambia’s Future of Work, Through Home-Grown Solutions for Inclusive Growth.”

North-Western Province Minister Robert Lihefu highlighted FQM’s Kansanshi Mine for its significant role in employing local talent and contracting Zambian businesses. “It is only through homegrown solutions that we can attain inclusive economic growth,” said Minister Lihefu, applauding FQM for recruiting local workers and supporting contractors from the province.

FQM’s Kansanshi Mining Human Resource Manager, Mazila Mwinga, emphasized the need to equip youth with relevant skills to meet evolving workplace demands. “Collective action is essential to provide young people with decent work and a brighter future,” she said, stressing evidence-based employment policies.

Zambia Congress of Trade Unions Deputy Secretary General Catherine Kanumoya also echoed the call for localized development strategies. “We must enhance our local resources, knowledge, and talent to develop inclusive, sustainable economic systems,” she stated.

During the ceremony, Kansanshi Mine honored 150 employees for excellence in areas like safety and dedication. FQM reiterated its commitment to inclusive employment, skills development, and long-term community empowerment through its shared value approach, which includes local recruitment initiatives and expanded trades training programs.

FQM’s continued investment in Zambians is seen as a model for sustainable, locally driven economic transformation.
