Gov’t Reaffirms Commitment to Sustainable Farming at National Symposium
The Zambian government has reiterated its unwavering commitment to sustainable agriculture and climate-smart farming, as a means of building resilience, increasing productivity, and lifting farmers out of poverty.
Speaking at the official opening of the National Technical Symposium held at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre in Lusaka, Ministry of Agriculture Permanent Secretary for Technical Services, Mr. John Mulongoti, emphasized the government’s resolve to transform the agriculture sector.
Representing Minister of Agriculture Hon. Reuben Mtolo, Mr. Mulongoti outlined strategic interventions such as crop rotation, agroforestry, precision farming, and irrigation as key to achieving long-term agricultural sustainability.
“These interventions are crucial for helping farmers adapt to the adverse effects of climate change while improving yields and soil health,” Mr. Mulongoti stated.
He highlighted impactful government and partner-driven initiatives including the Zambia Integrated Forest Landscape Project in Eastern Province and the Zambia Growth Opportunities Programme, which is targeting 600,000 farmers nationwide.
Mr. Mulongoti also underscored the importance of collaborative efforts with the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), particularly in enhancing advisory services and supporting women and vulnerable households through sustainable farming practices.
He cited a UN-Government coalition currently reaching 3 million beneficiaries in 16 climate-vulnerable districts as a testament to Zambia’s commitment to inclusive agricultural development.
The symposium—organised by the FAO—is centered on key themes such as the Comprehensive Agriculture Transformation Support Programme (CATSP), the Sustainable Agriculture Financing Facility (SAFF), and the strengthening of agricultural extension and plant health services.
Mr. Mulongoti praised the FAO for its enduring partnership and called on all stakeholders to leverage insights shared at the event to drive the future of agriculture in Zambia.
“Together, we can build a resilient, productive, and sustainable agricultural system that ensures food security, boosts income, and reduces poverty,” he said.
The symposium continues through the week, bringing together policymakers, technical experts, and development partners to share innovations and strategies for sustainable farming.
