Sinomine Kitumba Minerals Launches $600 Million Copper Mine in Zambia
Zambia’s mining sector has received a significant uplift following the official launch of Sinomine Kitumba Minerals’ $600 million copper mining project in Mumbwa District, Central Province.
The project marks one of the largest mining investments under President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration and is expected to substantially increase copper output and bolster the nation’s renewable energy efforts.
Officiating at the launch, Minister of Mines and Mineral Development, Hon. Paul Kabuswe, hailed the initiative as a major step toward meeting Zambia’s ambitious target of producing 3 million tonnes of copper annually by 2031.
“The Kitumba Mine will process 4.5 million tonnes of copper ore per year and yield 50,000 tonnes of refined copper. This project brings us closer to our national production goals,” he said.
The project will also generate approximately 2,500 jobs, offering a significant employment boost to the local economy. Additionally, the construction of a 50-megawatt solar power plant on-site demonstrates Sinomine’s commitment to sustainable and environmentally responsible mining practices.
“This is a model for sustainable mining that balances economic growth with environmental responsibility,” Minister Kabuswe added.
Sinomine Chairman Wang Pingwei expressed confidence in the company’s partnership with Zambia, describing the project as “a milestone in our collaboration and commitment to Zambia’s development.”
