SEPA Calls for Urgent Action on Child Abuse Crisis in Zambia

The Social and Economic Progress Agency (SEPA) has strongly condemned the recent child abuse cases in Zambia, calling for urgent and decisive action to protect vulnerable children.

The organization’s statement follows alarming reports highlighted by Hon. Doreen Mwamba, Minister of Community Development and Social Services, detailing horrific cases of abuse suffered by children.

SEPA has joined the government in declaring the issue a national crisis requiring immediate intervention.

SEPA, known for its work in transforming rural communities and advocating for children’s rights, emphasized the need for sector-specific child protection guidelines and mandatory safeguarding policies in institutions that work with children.

“We must ensure that children are protected at all levels of society. The responsibility to safeguard them rests with all of us—families, communities, and institutions,” said Mailes Zulu Muke, Executive Director of SEPA.

The organization also supports stricter vetting procedures for individuals working with children and increased training for caregivers, teachers, and healthcare workers to recognize and respond to signs of abuse.

SEPA reaffirmed its dedication to protecting children through the Make Way Project, an initiative aimed at providing safe access to sexual and reproductive health rights for young people. The program empowers children with knowledge, amplifies their voices, and fosters safer environments for accessing essential services without fear or stigma.

In alignment with the government’s efforts, SEPA is also advocating for child-friendly reporting mechanisms that allow children to safely report abuse, ensuring that every case is swiftly investigated and addressed.

SEPA has called on community leaders, parents, and caregivers to be vigilant and proactive in protecting children. “Let us all become child keepers—standing together to ensure no child is left vulnerable to abuse,” urged Muke.

The organization reaffirmed its commitment to working alongside the government and other stakeholders to promote a safe, nurturing, and dignified environment for every Zambian child.

“Together, we must ensure that every child grows up in safety, dignity, and love,” Muke concluded.
