Zambian Breweries Hosts Stakeholder Tour to Highlight Water Stewardship Ahead of World Water Day
Zambian Breweries recently hosted a stakeholder tour at its Lusaka Mungwi Plant, bringing together key players to discuss sustainable water management in the lead-up to World Water Day on March 22, 2025. The event focused on water conservation efforts, showcasing best practices in water efficiency, recycling, and environmental responsibility.
The tour attracted representatives from the Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation, Ministry of Green Economy, GIZ, World Wildlife Fund (WWF), National Water Supply and Sanitation Council (NWASCO), Lusaka Water Security Initiative (LuWSI), the Kafue Basin Joint Action Group, Chilanga Cement, and other important organizations.
Sandra Ngozo, Monitoring and Evaluation Officer for LuWSI, emphasized the importance of private sector involvement in water conservation efforts. “While Zambian Breweries is focused on beer manufacturing, it is also making efforts to conserve the environment and promote sustainable development,” she said. “Water stewardship is a collaborative effort, and together, we can conserve our water resources.”
WWF’s Private Sector Engagement Coordinator, Gershom Pule, stressed the need for collective action. “Water is a shared resource, and this presents complexities in addressing collective challenges. Without collaboration, it will be difficult to effectively tackle the water-related issues that affect almost every stakeholder in the country.”
As water plays a vital role in the production of its products, Zambian Breweries reaffirmed its commitment to water stewardship, ensuring that its operations remain efficient and environmentally responsible. Tawanda Hojane, Director of Legal and Corporate Affairs, addressed the attendees, saying, “As Zambia’s largest beer manufacturer, water is at the heart of what we do. But beyond brewing, we recognize that water is a shared and finite resource that must be protected for the prosperity of our communities, industries, and future generations.”
Hojane further highlighted that water stewardship is a core pillar of Zambian Breweries’ sustainability agenda. “We continue to invest in cutting-edge technologies to optimize water usage. This visit fosters knowledge-sharing and reinforces our commitment to responsible water management.”
The tour concluded with a strong call to action for government agencies, NGOs, industry partners, and communities to take a more active role in sustainable water management to ensure the future security of Zambia’s water resources.
