FQM Stands with Government to Shape the New Global Mining Landscape

First Quantum Minerals (FQM) has reaffirmed its commitment to Zambia’s mining sector, standing alongside the government to drive copper production towards the ambitious target of 3 million tonnes per year.

Speaking at the 2025 Investing in African Mining Indaba in Cape Town, FQM Director of Corporate Affairs John Gladston shared insights on the company’s ongoing contributions to Zambia’s mining industry.

He was joined on a high-profile panel by Zambia’s Minister of Mines and Minerals Development Hon. Paul Kabuswe, Zanaco Chief Executive Mukwandi Chibesakunda, and Copperbelt Energy Corporation Chief Executive Mutale Mukuka, with Beltz Mining Managing Director Nkandu Beltz moderating the discussion.

FQM’s unwavering support for Zambia’s mining growth is underscored by its US$1.25 billion S3 expansion project at Kansanshi Mine in Solwezi, set to open later this year. The expansion will increase ore processing capacity by 25 million tonnes annually, significantly extending the mine’s life by over 20 years.

Energy security is also a critical factor in reaching the 3 million tonne production goal. Mr. Gladston highlighted FQM’s collaborative projects with ZESCO, aimed at boosting energy generation and grid stability.

The company’s partnership with TotalEnergies to develop solar and wind projects is expected to add 500MW of renewable energy by the end of the decade, reinforcing Zambia’s sustainable mining ambitions.

FQM is further supporting Zambia’s exploration efforts, having handed over a high-resolution airborne survey mapping 80,000km of the Copperbelt Province. This data will help identify new copper deposits, paving the way for resource development and future investment.

“First Quantum Minerals is a growth partner for Zambia’s present and future,” said Mr. Gladston. “We remain committed to working alongside the government to ensure regulatory stability, allowing large-scale mining operations like Kansanshi and Trident to thrive and contribute to the nation’s production goals.”
