Zambia Refutes Claims of UN Sanctions, Clarifies UNHRC Status

The Zambian government has dismissed media reports suggesting the country has been sanctioned or expelled by the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).

Speaking through a formal statement, Ms. Etambuyu Anamela Gundersen, Permanent Secretary for International Relations and Cooperation, clarified Zambia’s status and reiterated its commitment to human rights.

Contrary to claims published in the Daily Nation newspaper, Ms. Gundersen emphasized that Zambia is not currently a member of the UNHRC, rendering the alleged expulsion or sanctions impossible.

She explained that the UNHRC consists of 47 elected member states, with seats allocated based on equitable geographical distribution.

Zambia, which previously served on the UNHRC from 2006 to 2008, is now vying for membership for the term 2027–2029. Elections will take place in 2026 under the African States region quota for the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

The Permanent Secretary highlighted Zambia’s proactive stance on human rights, including its cooperation with UN Special Rapporteurs. Notably, the Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Opinion and Expression is set to visit Zambia on January 19, 2025, at the government’s invitation.

Ms. Gundersen also called for responsible journalism, urging media practitioners to uphold ethical standards and avoid spreading misinformation.

She stressed that factual reporting is crucial to safeguarding democracy, peace, and sustainable national development.
