Senegal and Mauritania Achieve First Gas at Greater Tortue Ahmeyim Project, Ushering in New Energy Era

Senegal and Mauritania have officially commenced gas production at the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) project, marking a significant moment in West Africa’s energy sector. Developed by bp and Kosmos Energy, in partnership with Senegal’s Petrosen and Mauritania’s SMH, the project represents a breakthrough in regional energy security and industrialization.

The GTA project achieved “first gas” on December 31, 2024, from reservoirs 120 kilometers offshore and 2,850 meters underwater. Utilizing a four-well subsea system connected to a Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) unit, the project processes gas for export via a 2.5 million tons per annum (mtpa) Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) vessel.

This cutting-edge infrastructure includes a concrete breakwater, housing platforms, and accommodation facilities, forming the GTA hub terminal.

With a massive reserve of 425 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas, the GTA’s initial phase focuses on exports, with future phases integrating local energy use. The project positions Senegal and Mauritania as emerging LNG exporters, with potential output to double in later stages.

“This milestone highlights Africa’s gas potential. The GTA project exemplifies the importance of strong public-private partnerships and pro-investment policies,” said NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the African Energy Chamber.

Both Senegal and Mauritania have reformed their legal and regulatory frameworks to attract foreign investment and promote local participation. Senegal updated its 1998 Petroleum Code, while Mauritania advanced reforms to align with international standards.
