Zambia to Host Lake Tanganyika Conference of Ministers in 2025
Zambia will host the prestigious Lake Tanganyika Authority (LTA) Conference of Ministers in 2025, following a unanimous decision made during the 12th Ordinary Meeting of the LTA Conference of Ministers held in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The four Member States—Burundi, DRC, Tanzania, and Zambia—agreed that Zambia would host the 13th Ordinary Meeting in October 2025.
In a communique issued at the conclusion of the meeting, the LTA Conference of Ministers expressed gratitude to the Zambian government for its offer to host the event. The communiqué also extended appreciation to Hon. Mike Mposha, MP, Minister of Green Economy and Environment, for his dedication as the outgoing Chairperson of the Conference of Ministers.
The conference directed the LTA Secretariat to inform Tanzania about initiating the process to identify a suitable candidate for the position of Executive Director, as the current contract expires in March 2026. The appointment will be discussed at the 2025 meeting in Zambia.
Additionally, the conference noted the successful implementation of the annual fish ban on Lake Tanganyika, highlighting the collective efforts to ensure sustainable fisheries management in the region.
At the meeting’s close, the chairmanship was formally handed over from Hon. Mposha to Jean Pierre Tshimanga, Minister for Fisheries and Livestock of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The LTA Conference of Ministers represents a critical platform for the coordination and cooperation of the four riparian countries in the management of Lake Tanganyika, one of Africa’s largest freshwater lakes.
