President Ramaphosa Signs Rail Safety Bill into Law
President Cyril Ramaphosa has officially signed the Rail Safety Bill into law, marking a significant step towards enhancing railway safety across South Africa.
The legislation introduces new measures, including railway safety permits and a national monitoring system, to ensure safer railway operations for both passengers and the environment.
The Bill establishes a uniform policy framework and updates railway safety standards to reflect developments such as South Africa’s investment in rolling stock and the standard gauge railway system.
Repealing the National Railway Safety Regulator Act of 2002, the law also aligns the country’s rail safety regime with Southern African Development Community (SADC) objectives, supporting regional integration.
The Railway Safety Regulator will continue its mandate under the new law, bolstering efforts to make rail an efficient and reliable mode of transportation.
