President Hichilema Commissions Euro Africa Kalengwa Mine After 40-Year Hiatus
President Hakainde Hichilema has commissioned the Euro Africa Kalengwa Mine in Mufumbwe District, North-Western Province, marking the resumption of operations after four decades.
At the ceremony, President Hichilema expressed gratitude to the people of Mufumbwe and the nation for trusting the government’s commitment to fostering development. He emphasized the importance of job creation and urged the mine to prioritize employing local residents.
“I urge you to employ local people. If they are not qualified, send them to school. And you locals, when you get a job, work hard to develop this country,” he said.
The President highlighted dialogue as a preferred approach to resolving disputes and urged the mine’s management to support local contractors. He encouraged local suppliers to meet the mine’s operational needs effectively.
Minister of Mines and Minerals, Paul Kabuswe, revealed that investments in the mining sector could create 24,000 jobs in Northwestern Province by 2025. He criticized the prolonged dormancy of Kalengwa Mine, stressing the need for action to improve livelihoods.
Euro Africa Kalengwa Mine Board Chairperson, Mulondwe Muzungu, assured the President of the company’s commitment to enhancing copper production in line with government targets.
Chief Mumena of the Kaonde people commended the company for involving local communities and echoed the call to prioritize local employment.
