Minister Mwamba Reaffirms Commitment to Children’s Rights at Children’s Parliament

Zambia’s Minister of Community Development and Social Services, Ms. Doreen Mwamba, addressed the Children’s Parliament on 18th November, emphasizing the government’s dedication to uplifting the welfare of children across Zambia.

The event, commemorating World Children’s Day, gave young participants a platform to debate and propose solutions to pressing issues affecting their lives.

In their ‘call to action,’ the children highlighted concerns including access to quality education, sanitation, menstrual health, and critical challenges like child neglect, abuse, exploitation, and streetism.

Ms. Mwamba assured the audience of the government’s commitment to protecting children’s rights, as outlined in the Children’s Code Act No. 12 of 2022.

She also spotlighted key government initiatives such as free education, the re-entry policy for young mothers, and increased Constituency Development Fund allocations aimed at improving education access.

However, the Minister condemned the rise in child abuse cases, including ritual killings and abductions, urging communities to protect children.

Ms. Mwamba stressed the importance of child participation in nation-building through activities like sports, school projects, and religious engagements, while advising them to focus on positive development and avoid harmful behaviors.

The Children’s Parliament concluded with calls for swift action from the government and stakeholders to address the challenges presented, ensuring a brighter future for Zambia’s young generation.
