Zambia Intensifies Efforts to Attract Green Investments at Global Forum in Korea

Zambia’s Minister of Green Economy and Environment, Hon. Mike Elton Mposha, has reinforced the country’s commitment to accelerating green investments during his address at the joint sessions of the Global Green Growth Institute’s (GGGI) 13th Assembly and 17th Council Meeting. The event took place at the GGGI Headquarters in Seoul, Korea.

In his speech to representatives of the 48-member organization, Hon. Mposha highlighted Zambia’s ongoing efforts to forge international partnerships aimed at scaling up green finance. “Zambia looks forward to strengthening our relationship with GGGI and other member and partner countries to help us scale up green investments,” he remarked.

The Minister emphasized the importance of innovative financial instruments like green bonds and debt-for-nature swaps to channel funding toward renewable energy projects and biodiversity conservation. He stressed that Zambia’s potential lies in its ability to strategically use climate finance and leverage its natural resources to transition into a low-carbon, resource-efficient, and resilient economy.

“Our goal is to foster growth that is profitable, and environmentally and socially responsible,” Mposha said, affirming Zambia’s commitment to sustainable development. He acknowledged, however, that while Africa contributes minimally to global greenhouse gas emissions, the continent remains highly vulnerable to the severe impacts of climate change, which pose threats to economies, infrastructure, and livelihoods across the region.

GGGI President and Chairperson, His Excellency Mr. Ban Ki Moon, commended Zambia’s dedication to leading Africa’s push for green growth. “While working as Secretary-General of the United Nations, I repeatedly said that without addressing the challenges of Africa, we will never be able to declare that we are living in a sustainable world. This is what I believe and what most member states believe, and we have to do much more for African development,” Mr. Ban stated.

Zambia joined GGGI in 2023 and has since aimed to attract green investments to support its renewable energy and environmental conservation initiatives. Accompanying Hon. Mposha at the meetings were Ministry of Green Economy and Environment Permanent Secretary Dr. Douty Chibamba, Zambia’s Ambassador to Korea His Excellency Andrew Bwezani Banda, and National Designated Authority (NDA) Coordinator Mr. Billy Katontoka.

The GGGI, established in 2012, is a treaty-based international organization dedicated to promoting sustainable economic growth in developing and emerging economies worldwide.
